The Transition to Kindergarten: Supporting Your Child’s Big Change

Starting kindergarten is exciting — and maybe a bit nerve-wracking for both children and parents. It’s a big milestone, and it’s completely normal to wonder whether your child is ready.

Here’s the good news: school readiness isn’t about knowing the alphabet or being able to count to 100. It’s about social and emotional skills — the ability to separate from caregivers, manage big feelings, follow simple instructions, and engage with peers. And these are exactly the skills that children develop through quality early childhood education.

In our Kinder Room at MACC, we run a government-funded kindergarten program delivered by a qualified early childhood teacher. The program is designed to build the foundations children need for a confident transition to school — from literacy and numeracy concepts woven into play, to developing independence, resilience and a love of learning.

So what can you do at home to help? Talk about school positively. Read books about starting school together. Practise small things like packing a bag or opening a lunch box independently. And most importantly, trust that your child — with the right support — will be ready when the time comes. We’re here to help every step of the way.
