Our Educational Program

The Power of Play-Based Learning

Inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach — a child-centred philosophy where children learn through exploration, creativity and collaboration.

Children don’t learn best from sitting at tables or following instructions. They learn through play. When your child plays, they’re:

• Problem-solving: Building a block tower that keeps falling teaches persistence and engineering.
• Thinking creatively: Pretend play with friends involves negotiation, imagination and storytelling.
• Developing confidence: Trying something hard, failing, and trying again builds resilience.
• Connecting with others: Play is the language of friendship and collaboration.
• Making sense of the world: Through exploration and discovery, not lectures.

Our educators’ role is to create rich play environments, join children in their play, pose interesting challenges and follow their curiosity. We’re not directing; we’re facilitating. And real, deep learning happens.

Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)

The EYLF is Australia’s national curriculum for early childhood education. It guides our approach and helps us support children’s development across five key learning areas:

1. Communication, Literacy & Language

Children are natural communicators. We support this by reading stories every day, singing songs and nursery rhymes, conversation and listening during play, environmental print everywhere, and for preschoolers: emerging writing, letter sounds and phonological awareness.

2. Social-Emotional Development

We help children develop feelings awareness, friendships and resilience by naming feelings and modelling emotional expression, supporting problem-solving during conflicts, celebrating effort and persistence, and creating psychologically safe environments where all children belong.

3. Physical Development & Wellbeing

Movement matters at every age. We support this through daily outdoor play with climbing, running and exploring, fine motor activities like painting, puzzles and playdough, dance and music, healthy meals and water always available, and rest and sleep supporting growth.

4. Cognitive Development (Thinking & Learning)

We nurture thinking skills by following children’s interests and curiosities, asking open-ended questions, providing open-ended materials like blocks, water and sand, problem-solving together, and exploring concepts through play.

5. Numeracy & World Knowledge

We introduce numbers, science, and understanding the world through cooking and measuring, block building and spatial exploration, collections and sorting, books about the world, and conversations about nature, culture and community.

Kindergarten Program

Our Kinder Room delivers the government-funded kindergarten program. This includes:

• Structured curriculum delivered by an experienced educator
• Intentional literacy and numeracy learning woven into play and exploration
• Regular goal-setting and documentation of your child’s learning
• Communication with families about progress and development
• Transition support as children prepare for school

The program meets government requirements while maintaining our commitment to play-based learning and individual development.

Be You: Mental Health & Resilience

We’re a Be You framework participant. This means we:

• Support emotional awareness and expression. Children learn to name and understand their feelings.
• Create psychologically safe spaces. Every child belongs, is valued, and feels safe to be themselves.
• Teach resilience skills. Problem-solving, perseverance, and help-seeking become natural.
• Support parent wellbeing. We know parent stress affects children. We provide resources and create a supportive community.
• Address mental health proactively. We spot early signs of anxiety or concern and respond supportively.
• Work alongside the Victorian Inclusion Agency (VIA) and Preschool Field Officers (PSFO). We collaborate with specialist support services to ensure every child can participate fully and thrive in our program.
• Incorporate mindfulness activities. Children engage in age-appropriate mindfulness practices—breathing exercises, calm-down strategies, sensory activities and guided relaxation—to build self-regulation and emotional awareness.

Early childhood is the perfect time to build mental health and resilience. We’re committed to supporting the whole child—not just development, but wellbeing.

StoryPark: Sharing Your Child’s Journey

We use StoryPark, a secure parent communication app, to share your child’s day with you. You’ll see:

• Photos and videos of your child playing and learning
• Educators’ observations about what your child is discovering
• Milestones and developmental moments
• Invitations to contribute observations from home
• Messages about what’s happening this week

StoryPark keeps you connected to your child’s learning journey even when you’re apart. It’s also a wonderful record you can treasure for years.

Assessment & Planning

We don’t test children. Instead, we observe carefully and plan based on what we see:

1. Documentation. We record observations with photos, video and notes.
2. Observation. Educators watch children at play and note moments of learning.
3. Analysis. We reflect on what the observations tell us about each child’s interests, strengths and next steps.
4. Planning. We design learning experiences that build on each child’s interests and development.
5. Implement. Educators bring the plan to life, setting up environments and experiences that respond to what each child is ready to explore next.
6. Reflect. We revisit what worked, what surprised us and what we learned—then use those insights to begin the cycle again, always growing alongside your child.

This cycle repeats continuously. It’s responsive, individualised and respectful of each child’s unique learning journey.

Learning in Busy Routines

Real learning happens in daily routines too:

• Mealtimes teach self-feeding, social skills and conversation
• Transitions teach listening, cooperation and regulation
• Cleanup teaches responsibility and collaboration
• Outdoor play develops gross motor skills, risk taking and problem-solving.
• Rest time teaches self-regulation and body awareness

We don’t separate “learning time” from the rest of the day. Learning is woven throughout.
